এক শোক বার্তায় রাষ্ট্রপতি মরহুমার আত্মার মাগফিরাত কামনা করেন এবং তার শোকসন্তপ্ত পরিবারের সদস্যদের প্রতি গভীর সমবেদনা জানান।
পারিবারিক সূত্রে জানা গেছে, দীর্ঘদিন বার্ধক্যজনিত নানান জটিলতায় ভুগছিলেন ৭৭ বছর বয়সী এই নারী রাজনীতিক৷ অ্যালার্জি জনিত সমস্যা নিয়ে গেলো ২ জুন রাজধানীর একটি হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করা তাকে৷ তারপর থেকেই অবস্থার অবনতি ঘটে তার। কয়েকদফা আইসিইউ'তে চিকিৎসা দেয়ার এক পর্যায়ে গত ৬ জুলাই এয়ার অ্যাম্বুলেন্সে ব্যাংককের বামরুনগ্রাদ হাসপাতালে ভর্তি করা হয়।
ছাত্রজীবন থেকেই রাজনীতি সম্পৃক্ত সাহারা খাতুন সবশেষ নির্বাচনেও ঢাকা-১৮ আসনের সংসদ সদস্য ছিলেন৷ এ আসনে পরপর তিনবার নির্বাচিত হন। ২০০৯ সালে আওয়ামী লীগ ক্ষমতায় আসলে স্বরাষ্ট্রমন্ত্রীর দায়িত্ব পান তিনি। পরে ডাক ও টেলিযোগাযোগ মন্ত্রীর দায়িত্বও পালন করেন অ্যাডভোকেট সাহারা খাতুন।
