ক্ষুধায় বেশি লোক মারা যেতে পারে

 

আন্তর্জাতিক ডেস্ক: করোনা ভাইরাসে যতো মানুষের মৃত্যু হবে, এতে সৃষ্ট খাদ্যাভাবে তার চেয়েও বেশি মানুষ মারা যেতে পারে বরে সতর্ক করেছে আন্তর্জাতিক এই দাতব্য সংস্থা অক্সফাম। আশঙ্কাজনক একটি বিষয়ে এই দাতব্য সংস্থাটি সবাইকে সতর্ক করে এক প্রতিবেদনে বলেছে, ‘করোনার প্রাদুর্ভাব ক্ষুধা সংকটকে আরও খারাপ পরিস্থিতির দিকে নিয়ে যাচ্ছে। করোনা ভাইরাসের সামাজিক ও অর্থনৈতিক বিরূপ প্রভাবে সৃষ্ট ক্ষুধায় প্রতিদিন ১২ হাজার মানুষ মারা যেতে পারে।’

বৃহস্পতিবার (৯ জুলাই) ‘দ্য হাঙ্গার ভাইরাস’ শীর্ষক এক প্রতিবেদনে অক্সফাম বলছে, ‘মহামারির কারণে সাহায্য-সহায়তা কমে যাওয়ায় বিশ্বজুড়ে ব্যাপক বেকারত্ব, খাদ্য উৎপাদন এবং সরবরাহ ব্যাহত হয়েছে। যার কারণে চলতি বছর প্রায় ১২ কোটি ২০ লাখ মানুষ অনাহারে পড়তে পারে।’

করোনার কারণে সীমান্ত ও সীমান্ত দিয়ে খাবারের সরবরাহ বন্ধ থাকায় সবচেয়ে বেশি খাদ্য সংকটে থাকা কয়েকটি দেশকে ‘হাঙ্গার হটস্পট’ হিসেবে প্রতিবেদনে চিহ্নিত করা হয়। এর মধ্যে রয়েছে যুদ্ধবিধ্বস্ত ও চরম মানবিক সঙ্কটে থাকা ইয়েমেন, আফগানিস্তান, সিরিয়া এবং দক্ষিণ সুদান।

প্রতিবেদনে আরও বলা হয়, ভারত, দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকা ও ব্রাজিলের মতো মধ্যম আয়ের দেশগুলোতেও মহামারির কারণে মানুষ না খেয়ে থাকার মত পর্যায়ে চলে যাচ্ছে।

অক্সফামের অন্তর্বর্তীকালীন নির্বাহী পরিচালক চেমা বেরা বলেন, বিশ্বে সংঘাত-সংঘর্ষ ও যুদ্ধ, জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন, পরিবেশ বিপর্যয়, সম্পদের অসমতা এবং ভেঙে পড়া খাদ্য ব্যবস্থার সঙ্গে লড়াই করে টিকে থাকার চেষ্টা করা মানুষকে এখন এর ওপর আরেক বিপদ কোভিড-১৯ এর ধাক্কা মোকবেলা করতে হচ্ছে।

তিনি আরও বলেন, বিভিন্ন দেশের সরকারকে এই প্রাণঘাতী ভাইরাসকে নিয়ন্ত্রণে আনতেই হবে। এবং একইসঙ্গে এ মহামারি যাতে অনাহারে আরও বেশি মানুষের মৃত্যুর কারণ না হতে পারে সেজন্যও জরুরি পদক্ষেপ নেওয়াটাও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ।

More people can die of hunger

The report identified some of the countries with the worst food crises as 'hunger hotspots' due to the closure of food supplies at and across the border due to corona. These include war-torn and extreme humanitarian crises in Yemen, Afghanistan, Syria and South Sudan.

The report added that even in middle-income countries such as India, South Africa and Brazil, the epidemic has left people without food.

Chema Bera, Oxfam's interim executive director, said people trying to survive the global conflict and war, climate change, environmental disasters, resource inequality and a crumbling food system were now facing another threat, the Covid-19.

He added that the governments of different countries must bring this deadly virus under control. At the same time, it is important to take urgent steps to prevent the epidemic from killing more people.
